Dateline Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina

Orville and Wilbur Wright put Kill Devil Hills on the Map of American History.

From EyeWitnessToHistory.com:

On December 17, 1903, Orville Wright piloted the first powered airplane 20 feet above a wind-swept beach in North Carolina. The flight lasted 12 seconds and covered 120 feet. Three more flights were made that day with Orville's brother Wilbur piloting the record flight lasting 59 seconds over a distance of 852 feet.

The brothers began their experimentation in flight in 1896 at their bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio. They selected the beach at Kitty Hawk as their proving ground because of the constant wind that added lift to their craft. In 1902 they came to the beach with their glider and made more than 700 successful flights.

Having perfected glided flight, the next step was to move to powered flight. No automobile manufacturer could supply an engine both light enough and powerful enough for their needs. So they designed and built their own. All of their hard work, experimentation and innovation came together that December day as they took to the sky and forever changed the course of history. The brothers notified several newspapers prior to their historic flight, but only one - the local journal - made mention of the event.

My grandfather, Wes Cassel, was born that same day.

This might not be good news for Yours Truly

12/10/2009, MIDNIGHT UPDATE (from Binyamin's trusty assistant): In a few hours, Binyamin will send out a letter to his friends and supporters about his condition and JWR's future. He has no intention of placing semi-private info on the JWR front page. We had orginally considered recording his words but soon realised it would be impossible, as he is too weak. So we are instead sending his note via e-mail to those who are subscribed to the daily JWR update. (To be added, please click here.).

Binyamin is afraid that his writing skills will fall short. I assured him that the message he wished to convey will come through loud and clear.

Here are seven columns for your reading pleasure: Victor Davis Hanson, Bob Tyrrell, Larry Elder, Dick Morris, Ann Coulter, Cal Thomas. and George Will.

Messages can be sent to schmooze@jewishworldreview.com

I do hope Binyamin gets well and strong soon. I miss him - and I don't even know him. His kindness and integrity come through in his work, though, and I wish him and his family and friends all the best during this time.

I get great pleasure from reading JewishWorldReview.com. I've learned SO much over the years since my friend 'Red' (now expatriate in Texas) sent me a link to the site. Seems a long time ago now... I use Binyamin's material almost daily to post links on this blog. Will keep you posted.

Got all three crumb-crunchers again today, then taking a friend to my favorite meeting. Busy day. Cloudy, might rain s'more. Glad I'm here for it. Thanks for stopping by!

A perfect Saturday morning...

I'm at Lovely Daughter's house. Been here since early this morning so they can go to eastern North Carolina and pick up a truck for Handsome Son-in-law so I can get my BroncoII back. They've never done a road trip alone together - and I am so envious! Well, except for the fact that I get to hang out with the Pixie all weekend, and the weather is particularly ugly for travel. They HOPE to get where they're going before kickoff of the SEC Championship game, as they are a family of Gator Fans. My kids will come home tomorrow, which should see better travel weather all around.

Anyway, I'm using her little netbook - which I adore, it's so cute - but keyboard is tiny and screen is VERY small compared to my desktop...so I'm making a lot of typos. My dyslexic fingers keep hitting enter 'up' when I want to hit 'shift.' Annoying. My Pixie is having some cereal for breakfast, and I need to get the laundry in the dryer.

As food for a rainy day thought, here's a a column by Rich Tucker about the Constitutional amendment that stands between BarryOCare and the destruction of medical "care" in our country. Are you a Tenther?

Y'all go have a terrific day now - just heard from my kids, they're almost to Florence, SC and it's stopped raining. In honour of the kids - and because I used to be one - here's something it took me nearly an hour to find - enjoy!

Thanks for stopping by!

Another short trip in the WayBack machine...

Lazy Saturday morning 'round Pixie Place. So, before I get in the shower so I can go get some groceries (going to make turkey noodle soup) when My Chief gets home from work (he's already been here 3 times) - how 'bout some classic television from my younger days. No, I was NOT a child when this show aired. It wasn't meant for children.

Every season had a different opening sequence, but Season One doesn't sound good, so I got this one instead.

Then, one of my favorite bits from the show - and I know I'm not the only one who liked these guys!

UPDATE: Waiting for Lovely Daughter to come get me so we can take her daddy his keys. This is the 2nd time he's had reason to like me having my own transportation since I gave my BroncoII to Handsome Son-in-law. Y'all have a fine day, I'll let you know how the soup turns out when I finally get to the store!

Wakko Wednesday

I stayed out later than usual last night, though it was great fun and so rewarding. But I'm a little blah today, moving easy, with lots to do. Hanging out with the Pixie, cooking supper for her grandpa and parents, while she colours and watches Little Einsteins.

I loved this show when Lovely Daughter was a little girl.

The Schoolhouse Rock 30th Anniversary Edition is on my Christmas list.

I've been trying to remember the name of this show for months now. Solved! Just go to YouTube's search engine, enter Ben Vereen Children's Show and VOILA! Here it is!

Michael Henry Cassel, 19 May 1932-11 November 1991

Michael Henry Cassel
Born 19 May 1932
Died 11 November 1991

I'm going to post a few recollections of my dad here today. Many of them will be factually wrong, probably, as my brain has been a bit damaged over the years and some things are mixed up while others may be absent altogether. But my brother reads this blog, so I'm sure he'll correct any glaring inconsistencies, and I'll amend as needed.

Mike Cassel was born in Glasgow, Montana. I don't know when the family moved to Havre. He ran away to join the service at 17, I think I heard. When he was 20, he went home on leave. He met Mom at one of her college dances, Friday the 13th of March, and asked her to marry him just ten days later, before he returned to duty back east. She said yes. Mom got a tiny diamond in the mail and planned the wedding, and on November 7, while he was again on leave, they got married. The honeymoon consisted of driving back to D.C.

Dad was so smart...and he got bored easily, and luckily married a woman willing to pack up the kids - Glenn was born in '54, me in '55 and Thelma in '63 - and the household and traipse off to the next perfect job after he got out of the Air Force. Usually every summer. All around the state of Montana. I went to twelve different schools in twelve years. The year I was in the third grade, I attended three. In two different towns. Twelve schools, numerous towns, three countries. Perfect training for this Navy Wife of 22 years.

Mike Cassel understood electronics and airplanes and weather and weapons. He hunted the prairies of north central Montana till shortly before he died. He enjoyed fly-fishing. He liked beer and a nice pipe. He could play harmonica and piano by ear. He was a voracious reader and a spirited writer of letters to the editor and he even wrote a book.

My dad was a paratrooper in the Montana National Guard. He jumped out of one too many airplanes, tore the hell out of his knees, and eventually lost one leg to staph infection that nearly killed him more than once. When they came to visit us in Maine because I was having a bit of surgery (and to meet his son-in-law for the first time), he gave me his jump wings. I still have them.

Dad got his college degree when he was 40. He taught shop. He did his student teaching at my mom's school, in my class, and he made physical science interesting. The other kids loved it and I didn't hate it either. Because of him, I love to fly - being in the Ercoupe or the Stinson with him was such fun - we used to land at the lake and drive around on the dirt roads.

We found out about the cancer around Christmas of 1989. Mom called me at my in-law's house in Indiana, where we'd stopped to visit on the way from one duty station to another. They gave him two years, because he chose no treatment. Just under two years later, as I returned home after watching the Jacksonville Veterans Day parade with my husband and daughter, I answered the phone on the wall in this house and my mom's voice said, "He's gone."

My dad was opinionated, educated, loud, and obnoxious on many occasions. He was a much better grandparent than he was a parent. I think he liked to fight as much as I did. Maybe more. He fought his demons in a different way than I do...now.

Mike Cassel - husband, father, grandfather, fighter, friend, teacher, pilot, poet, warrior. He was a helluva man. And I miss him still.

Hump Day is BUSY this week

My Pixie's cousins are spending the day here so their mama can work the lunch shift at Applebee's. The boys are 3 1/2 and 10 months and it is a LOT of work for me. Kind of embarrassing, really, that I wear out so easily, but there ya go. Coupled with the stupid time change, I'm just tired all week this week, I think! The WEATHER is GORGEOUS, thank heaven!

There have been some wonderful -dare I say hopeful? - things happen in the world of American politics this week, and even the 'unsuccessful' bids to take back the Nation are small successes, in my opinion. There are some terrific writers listed in my sidebar, plus some columns I'll list here. Have a GREAT day! Thanks for coming by!

A few to check into:

Stimulus Watch at Townhall.com (FIXED), Jonah Goldberg, John Stossel, Glenn Garvin, Liz Sidoti.

UPDATE: Almost forgot Michelle Malkin!

I am as racist as Rush...

...and since I really LIVE by the words spoken by Martin Luther King, Jr so many years ago, I decided to post this article from CNSNews.com:

This man is probably the single greatest spokesman for the NFL other than someone that’s in the NFL, and he’s disqualified because he’s conservative? I find it quite offensive.

I am not a member of any religion. I don't belong to a church or a synagogue. Don't see that changing any time in the near future. What I do have is a set of personal standards, most based on Old Testament Biblical teachings.

One of the reasons I don't have a religion is that too many who do belong to a church seem to have rather flexible 'standards.' I have certain standards - maybe fewer than churchgoers, which simplifies things for my little brain. Too many rules mean I forget too many things. I work at sticking by my personal standards. Never say Never. People are more important than Things. Racism is wrong. When you work to earn something, its value increases a thousandfold over having it handed to you for free.

Standing up, when necessary, for a man who's been lied about repeatedly - whether I agree with him or not - is one of my standards. My own personal integrity demands it.

The NFL owners and commissioner are obviously the hypocrites many "big business rich folks" have the reputation for being. This makes me sad. Having been to only one NFL game and only because Lovely Daughter was there to perform with her cheer squad at half time, I can't exactly do what Mr. Muller has done.

But I would.

Happy Birthday, Pixie!

Two years ago today, Lovely Daughter and Handsome Son-in-law presented me with the best gift ever...well, since Lovely Daughter was born, anyway.

Arrival of this little blond Pixie Bug has changed my life. As we get older, I think we forget how much fun Life can be, how simple we can keep it if we wish, and how fascinating things are when looked at through the eyes of a toddler.

I am truly grateful to have the opportunity to learn, again, what Life is all about.

Happy Birthday, Kaylee!!!

New Addition on My Blogroll

My brother has a post at Parrothead Jeff - Las Vegas Latitude, Parrothead Attitude.

In case you don't know, Glenn was recently discovered to have a 'mass' on one of his kidneys. Throws the whole world into a bit of a spin, and I had funds standing by in case they wanted me to fly up there. Thankfully for all of us, my presence was not required (or wanted), as surgery was a resounding success and recovery is proceeding at a brisk pace. I suppose I could've gone just to get in the way and feel important, but I'm glad it worked out so well. For all of us. Glenn's Lovely Bride and Beautiful Daughter kept me in the loop, and I'm so grateful to them for that. (I am, however, disappointed I didn't get a trip West...dammit)

Now, go read Glenn's 'new' perspective - when the going gets tough, Navy Wives get tougher. Thanks, Sharon!

Honeymoon in increments

My Chief and I got married in February of 1985. He wasn't a Chief then. We dressed in our cleanest Levis and running shoes, said the proper words in front of a judge in Memphis, Tennessee, then spent our last $12 on a bottle of Asti and 2 packs of smokes. I took him back to the barracks at zero dark thirty and didn't see him again till the following Tuesday.

We decided some time later that instead of the one fancy blow-out honeymoon most brides insist upon, we'd take our honeymoon in bits, over time, with little regard to the time of year. It's been nearly 25 years now, and we are off on another bit of honeymoon. Living happily ever after, now and then...

This time, we're packing up the kids and the Pixie and heading for Damascus, Virginia. My Chief and kids will ride the Virginia Creeper Trail early on Saturday, and will try to catch the Gators game later. My Pixie and I will stroll around town enjoying each other's company and the truly AUTUMN weather!

Taking Monday off to rest from the trip, I hope to be back here Tuesday morning. Those of you who MUST contact me have my cell phone number. Y'all have a FINE weekend, and thanks for stopping by!

UPDATE: We're back, and I'm tired. LONG weekend, but worth every muscle spasm I'm having. The Pixie is well and truly potty trained, the kids had a good time blasting down the Creeper Trail, and Grandpa seems pretty happy, too. Glad we got home before dark. Cats are fed. Now I'm resting.

"...we females want to talk all the time about everything. Conflict is just another excuse to gab."

Betsy Hart at JewishWorldReview.com:

One of my own best women friends recently sent to me a piece that her husband (without comment, it turns out!) had e-mailed to her: "How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It" by Barbara Graham from O, the Oprah Magazine. Its subtitle says it all: "Forget everything you've heard about frankness, sharing your feelings, getting him to express his. Research into the functions of the male mind makes it clear that discussion may be the fastest way to shut down communication. (Oh, you noticed that, have you?)"

Graham sat down with psychotherapists Patricia Love and Steven Stosny. They teach extensively on gender differences, and last year co-wrote "How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It."

Stosny explains that "talking about feelings, which is soothing to women, makes men physically uncomfortable. There's literally more blood flow to the muscles. They get fidgety and women think they're not listening."

"Durh!" Any woman worth her salt knows men are different than women and should NEVER be required to replace the women who are close to her in her life, just as any man worth his salt will not expect his woman to be his 'buddy.'

Now, if we could convince the super-intellectuals that there are deeply ingrained differences in the genders, that each of us is part of the Whole, not The Same, we'd be MUCH better off as a Society...not to mention that we'd have MUCH happier marriages AND children.

Chick fil A Giveaway!

Wear your favorite team logo to Chick-fil-A on Monday from 10:30am to closing time, get a FREE Original Chicken Sandwich...that would be the one buttered...with a pickle. The BEST!

Sounds good, I'll have to find my Hawai'i shirt again...or Navy...or borrow a Gator shirt from Handsome Son-in-law! Don't have one for the Northern Lights, which is MY alma mater...*sigh*

Well, I'm outta here for now, we're going for an overnight stay-cation in the camper...in the front yard. Needed to move it and open it and clean it, don't feel like fighting crowds, traffic, and drunk drivers, so here we are. Gotta love it!

Y'all stay safe. Thanks for stopping by.

UPDATE: What a yummy lunch with hubby! TONS of Gator gear and Jaguar jerseys, with a smattering of Georgia and Florida State University. Saw one Clemson, a Navy Hockey, and one Florida State College at Jacksonville (formerly Florida Community College - Jacksonville). I had the only Hawai'i shirt and My Chief was wearing the only Padres shirt I saw.

My Pixie

Twenty-two months ago today, my BEEootiful Pixie was born, and our lives changed forever...again. See how tiny she was?

I am a happy Grandma Daycare, while Mama and Daddy go to work to earn the money so they can pay the rent on the place where she has her own room.

A few weeks back, we bought potty chairs, one for each house. Then I bought a couple dozen pairs of cotton training pants. This week, on Monday, we began in earnest to bring about the natural progression.

Today, we had no wet panties, no puddles on the floor to mop up, and used only two diapers - one for nap time, one for going home at the end of the day.

I am so proud. And a bit sad.

*sigh*

More than sausage...

Big Bad John, by Jimmy Dean, long before he began marketing sausage. Sometimes I got to stay up late to watch his show, if the Ralph the Dog muppet was on. I think I was 5.

Grandfather's family on my mum's side came from coal mining country in Ohio. This video shows why he stuck with dry land farming and teaching school out on the prairies of Montana, I think. It'd be my choice, too.

Non-government changes

I began this "stage" of my life at the young age of 45. The symptoms began to manifest the summer before we transferred to Hawai'i, but didn't arrive full-blown till September - I remember the FIRST DAY of extreme discomfort...and put it off to moving stress and "climate change" from SoCal hot and dry to tropical balmy and damp. After about 7 weeks of mood swings and lack of sleep, I went to see a doc at Kaneohe. She did the blood test, but gave me Prempro anyway...and within 20 minutes of taking the first dose, I could tell the difference. What would have been a severe hot flash became a THREAT of a hot flash (I was having flashes every 41 minutes, like clockwork - day AND night), and 12 hours later, I wasn't having even those. So I slept for the first time in weeks. I didn't spend hours crying about nothing.

They will pry my HRT from my fingers if they want it back. I ain't givin' it up.

But Celia Rivenbark has a much funnier take than mine!

Just pics

Not inspired, not creative. So check out my Pixie a few days back,
when it was VERY hot outside...

Did I mention I really like this guy?

And not just his cute self, of course, I like the way his mind works. Now, Stossel has his own blog, and I may be able to tear myself away from it for normal human interaction...in a couple hours.

I've also been to check out Grouchy Conservative Pundits - even though I'm only marginally conservative, I like they way those folks write. One of the Global Moderators is our friend SwampWoman, and one of the newbie registrants is an old buddy of mine from SoCal. Wow!

My blogroll continues to grow...
UPDATE! Another new one! On Paco's recommendation, go say howdy to Dan Collins at Piece of Work In Progress.

Here in NEFL, it's Hot as Hell with the blowers on, as my dad used to say - even at 8pm it was nearly +100F. Blech. Not sure when to expect relief - but hope it's in time for my birthday! Lovely Daughter, Handsome Son-in-law and BEEootiful Pixie came over to have Father's Day burgers & dogs with Daddy/ Grandpa. I let the other grownups do the outdoor part, I stayed inside with the Pixie and we arranged pickles, beans, and other assorted condiments in the comfort of the air conditioning. Oh, and we watched some Tigger & Pooh, while we waited for the ball game to come on. As the terrible writers at my school paper used to say, MUCH too often, "A good time was had by all." Pfft.

One more load of laundry to fold, then I'm off to bed. Thanks for stopping by!

Gah!

Spent many hours with no internet and no house phone. Generally no phone isn't a problem because I have a cell phone, with a handly little spot to store all the phone numbers I need or want or have to use. Well, MY cell phone spent the week in Kansas City, and the house phone went down, and not having contact with the outside pretty much ruined my day...for 2 days! Nice young man showed up yesterday & replaced the box the phone & computer plug into, all the lights are now properly lined up & the right ones are blinking. I'm hoping to be back on track today, but no promises on that score.

Woke up tired again.

Tomorrow is going to be a fun day, there's a bunch of us going to go for a paddle at Juniper Springs. The swimming hole is closed for renovation, but the kayak/canoe launch is new & improved & I can hardly wait! Depending on how the rest of today goes, I may be back with a couple easy posts. Y'all have a great day & thanks for stopping by!
